The Do’s & Don’t’s of Pill Splitting

Whether you’ve been using a pill splitter for years, or are just trying one for the first time, you may have some questions. How do I wash it? Is my pill safe to split? Today I will go over a few frequently asked questions we get here at Equadose.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of pills are safe to split?

When splitting pills, you want to be sure that you’re being safe. There a few things to look for before you split. Is your pill scored? If there is a score in the middle of your pill, it is generally safe to cut. Also, you should check the label for the words “time release” or “extended release”. Because these types of pills are designed with special coatings that delay the release of the active ingredients, they are NOT safe to split.

Do I need to wash my pill splitter?

Your pill splitter shouldn’t need washing on a regular basis. After you split your pills if there is any powder residue leftover simply wipe the powder off with a damp cloth or towel. But if you feel that your pill splitter needs washed, a gentle dish soap and warm water should do it.

Can I split larger pills into thirds?

Yes! Your pills can be split into thirds. The double blades on our pill cutter make it easy to score your pills before cutting. To do this, line up the pill to the blades and gently squeeze the cutter to score the pill with out cutting it. After you have scored it look it over to see if your lines look even. Then, if you are ready to cut, line up the scored lines on the blades and cut!
